Solastalgia - loss and return
August 2023
From Karta Pintingga, Kaurna, Permangk, and Ngarrindjeri Country (Kangaroo Island, Adelaide City, Hills and Coast), Solastalgia – loss and return gathers together chosen artists and poets for whom creativity and compassion for this suffering world, is the primary motive. Bearing witness to the intractable reality of societal and environmental ‘loss’, the question must be asked, to what do we wish to ‘return’?
Making room for both, the artists have generously taken up their pens, notepads, reeds, feathers, cameras, blankets, bodies, mikes and print making tools to record their heart events. In doing so they make space for us all to centre our beings in the broader landscape of compassion and kinship with all that remains. Their observances reveal much about loss and time; how it folds, perforates, fractures and heals, altering our relationship to the landscape and ourselves. We are reminded that we are part of a living and dying system; one in constant renewal, and that much sustenance can be found within our collective and committed presence in it.
